Play Manic Miner Online: The Classic ZX Spectrum Game

A brief summary of Manic Miner

Manic Miner, a game written by Matthew Smith was published by Liverpool based Bug-Byte Software in 1983 (and then again by “Software Projects“, Matthew’s own company, later that same year).  It’s a classic platform game that became (and still remains) a sensation among ZX Spectrum gamers in the 80s, known for its quirky and psychedelic characters, (extremely) challenging gameplay, and catchy (repetitive) soundtrack. The game follows the adventures of Miner Willy (who later appeared in “Jet Set Willy“) as he explores underground caves, collecting treasures along the way, whilst avoiding obstacles and the baddies.

Manic Miner’s 20 levels

Manic Miner was one of the first games to feature 20 different levels, each with its own unique design and challenges which were dreamt up by Matthew as a 17 year old lad whilst on holiday in Italy. Matthew then coded it within 8 weeks shortly after returning home to the UK, and with a publishing agreement with Bug-Byte Software cassettes were soon on the shelves.  The game’s repetitive soundtrack (the first game on the ZX Spectrum ever to feature in-game music) and vivid, simplistic and eye-catching graphics make Manic Miner a true sensory experience! (You can find this out for yourself of course, because you can play Manic Miner online just below!)
